SPL : The Miliband strikes back

As I reported here a few days ago, David Miliband's blog was claimed to cost £40,000 a year to run. I wrote then that "this strikes me as an exaggeration", and indeed it is - we now learn from Mr Miliband that:

The initial start up cost of the blog at ODPM was £6000. The changeover to Defra cost £1250 and ongoing technical costs amount to £900 pa. Since I write my own blogs, read comments, and don't have a shadow blogger the admin costs are low: one valiant official spends part of his time posting blogs and comments.

Despite the big comedown, this still seems remarkably expensive for a blog. It seems that, like Rooney, Miliband is still rather costly for those who wish to revel in his reflected glory...

It Should be free! Why do tax payers have to pay for his little PR stunt?

There is a good comment on Guido's blog:
"£1250 for the changeover to DEFRA? Bloody hell, as far as I could see it was just ONE jpeg that changed. No wonder taxes are this high when a minor minister can spend over ONE THOUSAND POUNDS on something a 14 year old could do in 5 minutes with photoshop."
